Art and Design

"If you hear a voice within you say ‘you cannot paint’, then by all means paint and that voice will be silenced" ~ Vincent van Gogh

Intent:

We believe that high quality art engages, inspires and challenges pupils to experiment, invent and create. Through our art provision, children will increase their sense of achievement and self confidence to explore creatively in a visual way. We intend to teach not only art skills, but also about individual artists (past and present), the impact that art has had within our history, and how art contributes to our communities, our country, and our selves.

Our art curriculum aims to ensure that all pupils:

Implementation:

Art and Design is taught termly throughout the school year, and has been planned to allow children to build on their knowledge and skills progressively. Teaching the children art skills has been carefully considered so that they are able to link learning back to previously taught techniques and continually build on this.

Tasks are selected to allow for the exploration of individual artists, a variety of different art skills (for example sculpture, painting, collage) and to incorporate local and national interests.

Extra-curricular visits

We are lucky to live close to the York Art Gallery, which we visit each year to encourage and inspire the children at Linton-on-Ouse Primary School and Nursery. Outdoor art sessions also take place within the local area.

Sketchbooks

The children begin to use sketchbooks in KS1, and continue with the same book throughout their time at school. The sketchbooks are used for all art lessons, to investigate, imitate, plan, and document their learning of artists and skills. Clear progression can be seen and the children are able to look back on their learning to take inspiration from past lessons.

Impact:

Impact is measured through teacher assessment based on statements on ‘Insight pupil tracking’ and categorised as:

·       Above

·       Below

·       Just Below

·       On Track

·       Greater Depth

Our curriculum, along with various trips, workshops and visitors, will impact our children by enabling them to make outstanding progress throughout their time at Linton-On-Ouse Primary School and Nursery and they will leave us with at least age-related expectations for Art. We will have developed enthusiastic artists and our children will understand how art and design has changed our lives and it is vital to the diverse cultures and communities we live in. This will all be evidenced through pupil voice, sketchbooks and through the children’s love of art and design.

All subjects are monitored and kept up to date by a specified subject leader. Each term, reports are created to share with school staff and governors, showing the children's progression and key development points for that subject area.

Parents are informed of their child's progress through parent-teacher meetings and written reports. Teachers will request to meet with parents should any concerns arise, aiming for the best possible outcome for the child.
