Geography

"There is an eternal landscape, a geography of the soul; we search for its outlines all our lives" ~ Josephine Hart.

Intent:

Geography is a valued part of the curriculum here at Linton-on-Ouse Primary School and Nursery. Providing a purposeful means for exploring, appreciating and understanding the world in which we live in, our children also learn about how it has evolved and how we can protect it and our environment. We ensure to give opportunity for our pupils to learn about their own locality, whilst becoming aware of and developing knowledge and understanding of the world beyond their own environment. We believe that it is important to build a geographical curriculum that champions the importance of practical and outdoor learning supported by a variety of fieldwork activities that build curiosity for learning about the world we live in.

Implementation:

Following the National Curriculum, at Linton-On-Ouse Primary School and Nursery, we deliver a rich, balanced and progressive curriculum across a rolling 2-year program. Our geography program is well sequenced and provides opportunity for our children to develop their geographical knowledge and skills.

Across all Key Stages, our curriculum allows children to further their learning and geographical questioning through a variety of supporting techniques including using suitable vocabulary, fieldwork techniques and maps, plans and atlases. Pupils will use secondary sources of information with accuracy, including aerial photographs, satellite images, etc.

Impact:

Impact is measured by assessing against the Essentials Curriculum milestones statements through ‘Insight pupil tracking’ as:

·       Below

·       Just Below

·       On Track

·       Greater Depth

At Linton-On-Ouse Primary School we strive for children to:

·      become explorers

·      understand the world around them

·      understand the environment and how they can help it

·      investigate places and patterns

·      communicate geographically

All subjects are monitored and kept up to date by a specified subject leader. Each term, reports are created to share with school staff and governors, showing the children's progression and key development points for that subject area.

Parents are informed of their child's progress through parent-teacher meetings and written reports. Teachers will request to meet with parents should any concerns arise, aiming for the best possible outcome for the child.
