Music

"Music brings us together, helping us reflect on who we are, where we have come from, and what lies ahead." ~ Barack Obama

Intent:

Music is an integral part of life at Linton-on-Ouse Primary School and Nursery, and lessons are fun and engaging. Our pupils are given the chance to move their bodies, learn songs, reflect on and appreciate Music.

We aim for children to:

Implementation:

Music is taught weekly, in discrete lessons led by the class teacher. Units of learning have been carefully sequenced so that children will build on their skills, and will be linked to existing music for inspiration. Children learn about composers and musicians through their music lessons, and are given opportunities to perform in a range of different groupings and for different audiences. To promote children's choral development and exposure to musical notation we follow songs on SingUp. If music can be linked to the wider curriculum then this opportunity is taken to embed and extend the learning further.

Each week the children learn songs to perform in our Golden Book Assembly. This is often themed for the time of year, a specific school focus, or to celebrate.

We are lucky to have additional singing instruction from the choir leader at Newton-on-Ouse church. She helps guide us through more complex songs for larger performances such as Christmas or Easter.

Impact:

Impact is measured through teacher assessment based on statements on ‘Insight pupil tracking’ and categorised as:

·       Above

·       Below

·       Just Below

·       On Track

·       Greater Depth

Our curriculum, along with various trips, workshops and visitors, will impact our children by enabling them to make outstanding progress throughout their time at Linton-On-Ouse Primary School and Nursery and they will leave us with at least age-related expectations for music. We will have developed enthusiastic musicians and our children will understand how music has impacted our lives and its importance for culture and religion. Our children will understand that they have the access to music in many ways and that it is there for them to find and enjoy. This will all be evidenced through pupil voice, work within their books and through the children’s love of music.

All subjects are monitored and kept up to date by a specified subject leader. Each term, reports are created to share with school staff and governors, showing the children's progression and key development points for that subject area.

Parents are informed of their child's progress through parent-teacher meetings and written reports. Teachers will request to meet with parents should any concerns arise, aiming for the best possible outcome for the child.

Additional Opportunities:

In addition to the school curriculum, Linton-on-Ouse Primary School and Nursery also work alongside North Yorkshire Music Hub to provide children with additional instrument learning.

This can include but is not limited to: guitar, strings, brass and wind instruments.
