Early Years Foundation Stage
Welcome to the wonderful world of Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) at Linton-on-Ouse Primary School and Nursery.
EYFS follows a different framework to the rest of the school, and our children learn in different ways that reflect their age, needs and interests. We hope this page helps to give you more information about a child's time in EYFS as well as describe what makes EYFS at our school unique.
What is the EYFS?
The early years foundation stage (EYFS) sets standards for the learning, development and care of children from birth to 5 years old. All schools and Ofsted-registered early years providers must follow the EYFS, including preschools, nurseries and school reception classes.
For further information, the DfE document for EYFS is at the bottom of this page.

Intent:
We have high expectations for the children in the EYFS, and hope for children to:
Be ever-evolving, to develop as independent, confident, resilient, successful & motivated learners.
Grow in their self-awareness and be adaptable to different social contexts.
Build on their communication skills for learning and life.
Enjoy learning, play, friendships and creating.
Respect themselves and others.
Be prepared for future learning and a life in an ever-changing world.
There are seven areas of learning and development that shape learning in EYFS. All areas of learning and development are important and inter-connected.
The Prime areas
Communication and language
Physical development
Personal, social and emotional development
To ensure our children make good progress in these prime areas, each child is assigned next steps for them to work towards. Progress is discussed in our team meetings and staff share ideas on how we can enable children to meet their goals by supporting them with questioning, modelling language and with resources within the provision.
The Specific areas
Literacy
Mathematics
Understanding the world
Expressive arts and design
This is linked to the curriculum in Years 1 - 6 and gives children a good start to be successful in their continued school career.
For further information and ways to support your child, please see the development matters document at the bottom of this page.
Implementation:
How do children learn in EYFS?
At Linton-on-Ouse Primary School and Nursery, we recognise that all children develop at different rates and learn in different ways. The three characteristics of effective learning are:
Playing and exploring: Children investigate and experience things and ‘have a go’
Active Learning: Children concentrate and keep on trying if they encounter difficulties and enjoy their achievements
Creating and thinking critically: Children have and develop their own ideas, make links between ideas and develop strategies for doing things
In EYFS, our day is a structured with daily teaching inputs in Phonics and Maths. In September, whilst the children are settling into their new routines these inputs are short and snappy, and we spend longer in free-flow. As the year progresses, our inputs become longer and more frequent to enable the children to be prepared for the challenges of Year 1. Beyond the classroom, we also enjoy our weekly Forest School sessions and engaging in outdoor learning.
Children are provided with lots of ‘free-flow’ time, in which they learn through play. Throughout free-flow, children can explore the indoor and outdoor classroom and choose their own learning whether that be role play, construction or an art activity. There is always an adult-led activity on offer which the children can also elect to do, often linked to our ‘book of the week’ – Where did that Stickman go?!
Our Outside Area:
The EYFS outside area has a mud kitchen, a large digging pit and a garden area to relax in.
We have created a welcoming, exciting environment to explore and learn. Making sure there is space for physical, imaginative and creative play.
